I’ve been using Ubuntu for a while and I’ve been very satisfied with my new OS, but recently I had some issues logging my YM account to Pidgin. I’ve found a post and I’ll ‘repost’ his entry. 
Some notes:
I strongly suggest you update your Pidgin client first before doing the next steps.
1. From the main window of pidgin, select Accounts>Manage Accounts. (Ctrl + A). Select your YM account and press modify.
2. Select the advanced tab and at the Pager server text box, enter: cn.scs.msg.yahoo.com 
Then save your settings and you’re back at YM using Pidgin.
