Yesterday, Filipinos celebrated the Black Nazarene Feast at Quiapo Church Manila. Millions of devotees swarmed the place to ask for blessing, forgiveness and repentance to the blessed figure.
If you’re not that fit to fill in the crowd, I strongly suggest to view from afar or better watch the tv. In this photo (by Ryan
), just imagine how would you struggle against such mob.

If you guys wonder how come so many people gather in this event, they say that the rope that’s connected behind the car of the statue is already blessed. Especially the statue itself. My mother said that many (if not all) made the wishes of the devotees come true. In return they pay tribute and offer their gratitude. One of my relatives swore that he’ll attend to this feast as long as his body can handle the stress.
Some say that despite the heat and possible confrontations with other devotees, at the end of the day, they somehow feel refreshed and they feel that they are ready for another beating. :no1:
Two years ago I was able to cross along Quiapo on my way home and I saw some of the people got hurt, others suffered from dehydration, while others got some bruises. This year’s celebration took two lives. That’s what I’ve heard from the news, I don’t know what happened to the other guy, but what I’ve heard was a 44 year-old man tripped from the crowd and was stomped by the other devotees. Of course they didn’t intend to kill the man but with this year’s attendance, death is certain. (Ilang paa rin yun.)
Anyway, its one feast that I’m proud of being Pinoy. Holding the tradition for hundreds of years is not a joke. :no1:
